High-end Audio Meets Single Case Audio There’s a convention in high-end audio …

High-end Audio Meets Single Case Audio

There’s a convention in high-end audio that says only separates can reach genuine high-end performance. Well not any more. The NaimUniti showed just how much audio performance and versatility could be housed within one stylish casing. Now the SuperUniti takes the concept still further to tear-up the rule book and play with the big boys.

“All-in-one” means not just an integrated amplifier and a couple of integrated sources. SuperUniti genuinely can do it all. Take a deep breath because listing its talents takes a while. SuperUniti is an integrated wireless UPnP™ network stream player, USB audio player, iPod and iPhone dock, internet radio, DAB radio, FM radio, ten input digital and analogue preamplifier, digital to analogue converter, and stereo 80 Watt power amplifier. And just so that you don’t lose track of time while listening – easily done – it has an alarm clock too. Out of breath?

SuperUniti might well contain all the audio versatility you’ll ever need, but audio versatility is nothing without musical ability, and that’s where four decades of Naim audio expertise comes in. Not only does SuperUniti do everything, it does it all with brilliant clarity and heart-stopping emotion. Every musical source, from internet radio via analogue inputs through to digital streams, is played with genuine musical quality. Every drop of music is squeezed from every stream of data – whatever its provenance.

naim nd5 xs improves!

We though you might be interested in knowing how the ND5XS has …

We though you might be interested in knowing how the ND5XS has developed during its two week bed-in period.

From cold out the box we suspected that the Naim ND5 XS would sound a little thin and restricted, but, we were pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Its now been almost 2 weeks since we first plugged in the ND5 XS and wow what an improvement! Simply put, the unit now has a greater sense of urgency about it, playing with more conviction and sounding more fluid than its initial performance suggested.

Our next step is to see how the ND5 XS improves with the addition of the Naim n-DAC and XPS power supply. We sure that by adding the upgrades it will again leap forwards in quality. We have also tried connecting our CD5 XS CD player through the rear BNC digital input of the unit and all agree that it sounded better.

We will keep you updated with our findings on the DAC and XPS upgrades later.

Yet another fantastic product from the guys in Salisbury, the ND5XS brings …

Yet another fantastic product from the guys in Salisbury, the ND5XS brings all the benefits of the NDX streamer but at a more affordable price point of £1925.00 inc VAT.

WHAT IS THE ND5 XS?

The ND5 XS is Naim’s new slimline network-connected source offering UPnP audio streaming and internet radio along with iPod/MP3 player & USB playback and three S/PDIF inputs.

 XS Series Source: ND5 XS is a derivative of the NDX network player and is pitched at the XS Series performance level – CD-quality streaming (and beyond – up to 24bit/192kHz) with Naim performance is now possible. The ND5 XS shares much of its digital and streaming board with the NDX; it makes use of the same DSP technology and has an identical digital signal path.

 Streaming Source: Central to ND5 XS is digital audio streaming. ND5 XS will stream all available music stored on UPnPTM–enabled devices connected to the home network, such as PCs, laptops, NAS drives and hard disk servers. Naim would always advocate well-ripped music as a starting point for customers wanting to stream music. A Naim hard disk player / server offers this.

 24/192 Hi-Res Audio: Hi-res audio is also big part of the ND5 XS offering. Users can enjoy 24 bit/192kHz audio files played either from memory stick connected via the front-panel USB socket or streamed from UPnPTM-enabled devices over the home network.

 Internet radio and optional FM/DAB: A network connection also opens up the world of Internet radio. Internet radio is supplied by vTuner full 5* service. Users can also access the Naim webpage http://myradio.naimaudio.com to manage their ND5 XS’s internet radio listings and add stations. Naim’s Choice is also available: a listing of Naim’s favourite internet radio stations, including an exclusive 320kbps stream from California’s Radio Paradise. An optional DAB/FM module is available to customers wishing to convert the ND5 XS to a multi-format tuner – the module will seamlessly integrate FM and DAB radio with internet.

 USB port for memory stick & iPod/MP3 player: A front-panel USB port caters for memory sticks and iPod / MP3 players. ND5 XS will take over the control, charging and display of stored audio. ND5 XS is also Apple authenticated enabling playback of iPad/iPhone/iPod-stored digital media, bypassing the iPad/iPhone/iPod internal DAC for optimised performance.

 Onboard DAC: Three 24 bit/192kHz –capable S/PDIF (BNC, RCA and optical) inputs offer connection to external digital sources, such as CD players or laptops.

 Gapless playback and extensive file formats: Gapless playback is available from ND5 XS and it will stream / play WAV, FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, AAC, Windows Media-formatted content, Ogg Vorbis and MP3 files from any suitable UPnPTM device or USB-connected storage device.

 Wired or wireless network connection: ND5 XS can be connected to the network either wired via an Ethernet connection or wirelessly. Naim recommends Ethernet for optimum performance, however a wireless connection has been provided for convenience.

CONTROLLING ND5 XS

ND5 XS can be controlled in three ways. It has a front-panel display and key mat interface and a remote control handset is also supplied. Naim’s n-Stream FOC app can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store and offers full control of ND5 XS (alongside Naim’s other streaming-capable players: NDX, SuperUniti, NaimUniti and UnitiQute). The app also offers System Automation, enabling input and volume control of most Naim CD players, preamplifiers and Naim’s digital to analogue converter within an existing Hi-Fi system.

KEY FEATURES

 UPnPTM-enabled to stream audio files from any hard disk server, such as HDX or UnitiServe, network attached storage (NAS) or laptop/computer via the home network

 vTuner 5* full service Internet radio

 Optional FM/DAB* module

 Front-panel USB port for replay of MP3 player/iPod and USB-stored audio

 Apple authenticated enabling digital output from iPod for ultimate quality iPod control, charging and front-panel content display when connected to front-panel USB port via standard iPod digital connector

 Three 24bit/192kHz-capable S/PDIF inputs for external digital sources

Naim and Focal band members from left to right; Roy George, Gérard Chrétien, Christophe Sicaud, Paul Stephenson, Neil Carden, Jacques Mahul and Theirry Guggenheim.

United by their passion for perfect sound, leading high-end audio brands Focal and Naim, today announce they are merging to create a new European leader in the audio industry. Focal & Co will own and manage Focal and Naim as independent brands, retaining their unique philosophies and product ranges.

Focal & Co, owned by Jacques Mahul (Founder and Chairman), CM-CIC (long-term shareholder in Focal) and the management teams of Focal and Naim, will employ 325 people at its facilities in Saint-Etienne, France and Salisbury, UK and have a combined turnover in excess of £48 million.

The Research & Development teams of Focal and Naim are central to the success of both brands. By bringing together these hugely talented individuals, Focal & Co will create an industry leading R&D capability to propel the Naim and Focal brands to the next level of innovative, high quality sound classics in the dynamic new world of hi-fi technology.

Jacques Mahul, Founder and Chairman Focal & Co commented: “For future success the key point is that there is no future for a speaker or electronic company alone. Partnership and collaboration are the way forward both in terms of investment and R&D. Working together means you can go more quickly and successfully whilst remaining true to the respective brands.”

Paul Stephenson, MD, Naim Audio Ltd and now member of the Board of Focal & Co added: “It is a merger of European minds. In Focal, we have found a partner which shares our passion for music and will help us take Naim to the next level. We can achieve far more together than would have been possible alone, yet at the same time we are able to retain everything that is unique about Naim and everything that our customers love us for. We have some incredible developments in the pipeline and this alliance will help us get those to market as quickly as possible.”

Other key shareholders also commented:Christophe Sicaud, President Focal & Co: “I see Focal & Co as the perfect home for Focal and Naim. We are both proud European businesses with a strong history and this merger will allow both brands to march forward with the confidence and resources needed for the future.”

Gerard Chretien, MD Focal-JMlab and member of the Board of Focal & Co: “More and more people are listening to music and are appreciating high quality sound. That is not only great news but also creates huge opportunities for our two brands. This new partnership will help both Focal and Naim make the very most of these opportunities.”

Frédéric Plas, Investment Director at CM-CIC Capital Finance: “For the past 10 years, we have been delighted to support Focal’s long term strategy to develop a unique position and a high end brand in its industry. Naim is the perfect fit.
